In Vranići, a few minutes outside Poreč: a stone terrace under an old olive tree, a brick wall full of bottles, and an open hearth that everything comes off — from the suckling pig on the spit to the veal under the bell.
A konoba on the old road
Kvartin sits in Vranići, on the road that runs out of Poreč into the fields. Inside, the walls are thin Istrian brick laid into niches, and a bottle lies in every niche; above them hang old farm tools, barrels, wicker demijohns and a pair of ox horns, all gathered from the surrounding farms and from taverns that have since closed.
Outside is a flagstone terrace with an old olive tree growing up through it, and against the wall an open hearth with split logs stacked beside it. Almost everything comes off that fire: the suckling pig that turns on the spit for hours, the lamb shank, the mixed grill, and the veal they cover with an iron bell and bury in embers.
